Chandigarh…Manali…Rohtang…Keylong

Day 1
Chandigarh-Kullu
Total Distance covered-250km

It was 1pm when we left Chandigarh and we had to cover almost 280km till manali. The road was nice and smooth with some light traffic till Ropar. Further the construction work was going on and it was a bit tiresome.Still,as it was the first day of riding, our spirits were high.Me and Chinmay have a habit to drive at our own speeds. Whoever is leading waits after say 50km till the follower covers up.I always used to follow as I kept myself engaged in photography at number of places.

We managed to reach Kullu by 10pm.Better than going for manali,we halted at Kullu itself as the hotels too are cheaper a bit.

DAY 2
Kullu-Manali(Kothi)
Total distance covered-35km

We just covered upto Manali where the day went in shopping and local sight seeing. The trees in the Vanvihar are really awesome with sky touching heights.

Further we decided to halt at Marhi. But it was late evening and we asked a restaurant wala for accommodation on which he agreed to give us some space. The place was Kothi just before Rohtang starts.
The guy dint take a single buck extra for accommodation, just charged us for the dinner.

From the next day it was the real test for the bikes.Just wished not to have any problem with the bikes.
Clicked from the roof top of the hotel…

Note that the above pictures are of the same mountain, one at sunset and other at sunrise.

Day 3
Manali(Kothi)-Keylong
Total Distance covered-100

IMG_1726

The road to Rohtang starts bulging with traffic soon after sunrise as thousands of tourists from Manali head for the snow clad pass.A local guy told me that about 800 vehicles climb up each day and the number goes upto 1000 on weekends.

So we had to start early, not as early as 4-5am,but at 7-8am.It is impossible for me to wake up at 4-5 in the morning.I dint knew that this is the last time I am actually seeing trees,A non-man made forest.Because beyond this point I saw only plantations near villages, rest it was all barren till Leh.

It was indeed pleasure to reach Rohtang after the pissing climb of about 1.5hours. Also, the bike had started behaving abnormally and first I thought there is some problem with my carburetor. But Chinmay told me that his bike is doing the same.
Many times I had to put on 1st gear for a simple uphill. Also the bike wasnt pulling as it did till the last day.
I understood….Its the HIMALAYAN SYNDROME

Finally we reached the top and I was astonished to see the snow.I had been to Kedarnath,Yamunotri,Badrinath before but havent seen so much of snow anywhere in my life.

But I hate crowded places, the natural beauty of a place is lost if a hoard of people is shouting and hopping on loud music, some drunk with cans of beers….I hate not the place but the people who make that place loose its beauty….And so I hated Rohtang.I dint even get off my bike.Just clicked some snaps and drove off expecting that there is lot more to see.
soon I was welcomed by the huge mountain opposite to Rohtang where it had fresh snowfall and the sun was shining up.

Meanwhile I had forgot to fill petrol at Manali.Look what I missed,to fill petrol.Last I had a full tank up at Chandigarh.Chinmay had filled petrol in between and he too forgot to ask me.My bike went at reserve as soon as I passed Rohtang. Soon I realized that I can drive on neutral with engine shut off.And I did it because of which I could reach Tandi. In between I saw a nice waterfall which was hardly visible on the opposite side of the valley. But I was able to get some snaps as I have a 75-300mm lens with my SLR.

I was surprised to see the changes in the landscapes that i could see after every 10-15km.The entire color of the surroundings changes frequently from a mountain to mountain. Each one has peculiar nature with no two having the same. One is red, other is purple, one is rocky while other has green grass cover.

My bike made it upto Tandi where me and Chinmay both gotta full tank along with 10 lit extra petrol.
It was not that tough finding hotel in Keylong as the Drabla hotel offered us a corner room for 300 bucks.
